Humanity took roughly 200,000 years to reach its first billion, and about twelve years to add its most recent one. Laid out as a timeline, the acceleration — and the recent slowdown — is stark.

That column is the whole story. The interval between billions collapsed from 123 years to 11, then stopped collapsing. The gap between the seventh and eighth billion was 11 years; the ninth is projected to take around 15, and the tenth around 23.
2022 was therefore an inflection point of a particular kind. Not the moment growth stopped — it hasn't — but the point at which each additional billion began taking longer than the last for the first time in modern history.
Why the dates are softer than they look
None of these are observations. Nobody counted the eight billionth person.
The UN designated 15 November 2022 as the "Day of Eight Billion" as a communications exercise, and said so openly at the time. The genuine uncertainty in the estimate runs to months either way — national censuses are years apart, coverage varies widely, and the intervening years are modelled from birth and death registration that is incomplete in much of the world.
The nineteenth-century dates are far looser still. "Around 1804" for the first billion carries an error bar of a decade or more.
What drove the acceleration
The compression from 123 years to 12 was not caused by people having more children. Birth rates were falling through most of that period.
It was driven by deaths falling faster than births. From the 1940s onward, antibiotics, vaccination, clean water, and improved nutrition cut child mortality dramatically across the developing world. Birth rates took another generation to adjust. The widening gap between the two produced the fastest growth in human history, peaking at 2.3% a year in 1963.
That gap is now closing from the other side. Global fertility has fallen to about 2.2, barely above replacement, while populations age and death rates gradually rise. The fertility decline is what turns the curve.
Is there an eleventh billion?
Probably not, on current projections. The UN's medium variant has population peaking near 10.3 billion in the mid-2080s and declining thereafter — meaning the tenth billion would be the last one added.
That conclusion is genuinely uncertain. Projections 60 years out hinge on fertility assumptions, and a swing of half a child per woman moves the 2100 figure by billions. Some models have population peaking earlier and lower, in the 2060s below 10 billion; others push past 11 billion. What nearly all of them share is the shape: a curve that flattens, then turns.
