The world population passed 8 billion in November 2022 and stands at roughly 8.2 billion today. Getting there took the entire history of our species — and the last stretch took almost no time at all. This page sets out the year-by-year numbers, where the estimates come from, and what the UN expects to happen next.

These are mid-year estimates from the UN Population Division's World Population Prospects, the standard reference series used by governments and statistical agencies worldwide.

Read down the right-hand column and the real story appears. Population is still rising, but the rate of increase has been falling for fifty years. The 1960s added a fifth to humanity in ten years; the 2010s added a ninth. We are adding people more slowly each decade even as the absolute total climbs.
Where the historical numbers come from
Before national censuses existed, population figures are reconstructions rather than counts. Demographers work backwards from parish registers, tax and military rolls, archaeological settlement data, and agricultural output, then cross-check the results against known epidemics, famines, and migrations.
The margin of error widens the further back you go. The 1804 date for the first billion is accurate to within a decade or two at best; the 8 billion mark in November 2022 is a UN projection pinned to a specific day for public communication, not a headcount. Even today no country counts its population continuously — censuses run every five or ten years, and the years between are estimates built from birth and death registrations.
The growth rate peaked in 1963
Global population growth topped out at about 2.3% per year in 1963. It has fallen fairly steadily since and now sits near 0.85%. That decline is why projections curve rather than climb straight up.
Two forces drove the mid-century surge, and they did not arrive together. Death rates fell first — vaccination, antibiotics, clean water, and better nutrition cut child mortality sharply across the developing world from the 1940s onward. Birth rates stayed high for another generation. That gap between falling deaths and still-high births is what produced the fastest population growth in human history. As birth rates followed deaths downward, the gap narrowed, and growth slowed.
What comes next
The UN's medium-variant projection has world population reaching roughly 9.7 billion by 2050 and peaking near 10.3 billion in the mid-2080s before beginning a slow decline. Nearly all growth between now and then is expected in sub-Saharan Africa; Europe and East Asia are already shrinking.
Projections that far out are sensitive to small changes in assumed fertility. A difference of half a child per woman — well within historical variation — moves the 2100 figure by billions. That is why the UN publishes a range rather than a single number, and why the peak date has shifted between revisions.
