Roughly 170,000 people die worldwide every day — about 2 people every second. That figure, the world death toll, is easy to state but easy to misread: it isn't a count of accidents and disasters, it's overwhelmingly a count of disease. Here's what's actually behind the number.
The leading cause isn't close
Cardiovascular disease — heart disease and stroke combined — is the single leading cause of death globally, responsible for roughly a third of all deaths worldwide, according to World Health Organization Global Health Estimates. That's more than the next several causes combined. Cancer is second, well behind cardiovascular disease but still one of the largest single categories, followed by chronic respiratory diseases.
These three — cardiovascular disease, cancer, and respiratory disease — are what demographers call "non-communicable diseases," and together they account for the large majority of the world death toll. This wasn't always true: a century ago, infectious disease dominated global mortality. The shift toward chronic disease as the leading killer is itself a marker of the same demographic transition that's driving falling birth rates worldwide.
What people usually assume is bigger than it is
War, homicide, and suicide dominate news coverage of death — understandably, since they're sudden and preventable in a way disease often isn't. But by volume, they're a small fraction of the total:
- Suicide: an estimated 700,000+ deaths per year globally (WHO)

- War and armed conflict: the most volatile figure of all — anywhere from under 50,000 to well over 200,000 battle-related deaths in a single year, depending on how many major conflicts are active (Uppsala Conflict Data Program)
Even at their highest, combined these categories are a small share of the roughly 62 million deaths that occur worldwide each year. That's not a statement about which deaths matter more — it's just what the data says about where mortality actually concentrates.
Deaths that don't fit a steady daily rate
Most causes of death — heart disease, cancer, diabetes — happen at a fairly stable rate year over year, which is what makes it possible to model them as a live per-second counter, the way World Pulse's death toll table does. Two categories don't behave that way:
