A world map colored by total population tells you China and India are big. A population density heat map — shading each country or region by people per square kilometer rather than raw headcount — tells you something more interesting: where on Earth people have actually chosen, or been forced, to concentrate.

Density vs. total population — a different story

Russia has a population of roughly 144 million spread across the largest landmass on Earth, giving it one of the lowest population densities of any major country. Bangladesh has about 170 million people in an area smaller than the U.S. state of Iowa — one of the highest densities in the world. Total population and density measure completely different things, and a heat map is built for the second one.

City-states like Singapore, Monaco, and Macao post the highest density figures of all, since their entire "country" is essentially a single dense urban area.
